Wholefoods Market Orlando | Self Service Options | Vegan | Take Out | Cafe | Phillip's Crossing

Well... as you might know by now, I LOVE Wholefoods- I adore it! Not so much in the UK, although i like it alot but it doesn't have the same magnet powder that the WFM does in Orlando, and stores within other areas of the USA in general.

We stopped by a few times during our time in Orlando... ok, pretty much everyday... because I found it so hard to eat out in the parks and restaurants ( more on that soon ) as I knew I could get a good vegan self service meal that could be modified to gluten & soy free for Opeie and I.

Since I've had so many allergies hit me like a bus (fast) in the last 3 years one might think it's annoying or obsessive to only ever talk about food on a blog, but when all you can eat are plant based things/ingredient/foods/snacks/meals it does become a passion to seek out the things you CAN eat.

My trainer Gareth always saying I'm focusing on what you CAN eat, rather than what you can't, so let's forget about dairy, eggs, soy and gluten, and focus on veggies.... I do this too most of the time, but then there are times where I just wish I could eat soy or gluten as there's so many foods I LOVE that aren't easy to find replicas of that are free from everything I can't eat.

Well, at Wholefoods, they cater for everyone. Seth ( my eldest son age 7 ) adores Wholefoods like me! He's not Vegan, but he makes his own choices and does enjoy alot of the vegan food Opeie and I eat. ( Opeie is vegan through his own choice, he doesn't really like anything non-vegan too much, I believe in letting your children decide for themselves - there's a great clip of a little boy doing just that here ) Pauly is definitely NOT vegan, although after a recent trip to Ethos, he declared in the car on the way home, IF he could get those burgers in the UK , he would switch to vegan-ism as he literally couldn't tell the difference between them and meat meat.

So, back to Wholefoods. They cater for everyone ( unlike the WFM in the UK which I find extremely difficult to eat at since everything is soya, non vegan or gluten based, they're not flexible on their options and they seem to only be able to offer a jacket potato and beans everytime I go since everything is covered in dairy butter, including all the vegetables! Annoying.

There are around 20 main meal options within the self service that are vegan friendly, a huge salad bar which contains fruit also. I found that were around 15 gluten free options, 8 soy free options and around  5 soy free AND gluten free options, which was good concidering that most places can't offer you anything at all.

Also :There were

4 types of rice
3 Cous cous' - sadly 2 were covered in (delicious looking ) feta - one of my prevegan fave cheeses.
Quinoa
3 types of fried tofu & veggies mixed together
2 Types of seitan
2 types of vegan pastas
3 vegan curries containing soy but no wheat / gluten
Stuffed vine leaves
Mashed butternut squash with Aubergine & Peppers
Roasted squashes and aubergine
12 types of salads / fruits
3 types of noodles
Nuts & dried fruits
Loads of sauces & herbs & dry inactive yeast sprinkle

( There's lots more, but I can't remember!!!)

It can be pricey depending on what you have, it's weighed ( I wish it was per container, as I'd pile it high, but sadly not) It was $7.99 per lb, and for the 4 of us, including pizza to take home it came to around $40 - which was including pieces of fruit, a punnet of strawberries and a bunch of bananas.

If you fancy pizza, the pizza chef's can whip up vegan pizza in around 8-12 minutes as they have Daiya and other vegan cheeses at the counter, Seth fell in love with Daiya while he was away, as he is a huge cheese lover like me!

and.... the best part, you can take the self service food home for breakfast!

Vegan / allergy food at Orlando Disney Parks & Universal Studios. Can you take food into the parks if you have an allergy or Vegan ?

One thing we've REALLY struggled with out here in Orlando is food at the parks. It's awful. I'm not being negitive for the sake of it, but other than Babycakes NYC not many places cater for Vegans, especially vegans who have an allergy to Soya or gluten.

Most places cook everything in soy oil, which seems mad to me since surely they are cutting those with soy allergies like us off from having a meal, which means less money for them!? Hard Rock Cafe at Universal, is trialling a new menu, and instead of Canola oil, they're now using soy oil?! Seems crazy to me. So 3 of the places we've tried to eat at, Hard Rock, Planet Hollywood and Season's at Epcot have basically said they have nothing than plain dry salad ( no dressings- nothing) or green beans and poatao wedges for a meal. CRAZY?! It makes me mad they simply can't do a plain bowl of pasta, with veggies, or even carry a bag of vegan cheese to do jacket potaoes? But that would be too obvious right, they cook everything in dairy or soy. Depressing.

So, I've had to get wise.

I've started packing food for us. Oxo's baby travel plates, bowls, and cutlery make life so much easier as there is nothing worse than trying to feed a baby who's motor skills are still growing from a wobbly plate or worse out of a plastic sandwich bag.... so I've been taking the plate, bowl and cutlery with us, which has been a massive help. I've been packing Potato wedges, pizza, houmous sandwiches, salads, carrot sticks, fruit salads and lots of other things for the boys to snack on.

Two of my go-to foods in England came in so useful.... Nakd bars and Nakd Raisins to tide the boys over until we could get healthy meals, or well... just ANY meals that Opeie and I aren't allergic to. We've also been packing plenty of Ella's Kitchen smoothie pouches since they're nutritious and they contain plenty of fruit which is great since it's water based and it's been super hot here lately!

In regards to the park, you can take food / drink items in, as long as they're not in a hard plastic 80's style cooler box. We took ours in a plastic freezer style bag I picked up at Wholefoods and put ziplock bag that I filled with ice cubes- to keep it cold.

What would you eat at Disney ?

What to pack for a long haul flight for toddlers, vegans, babies and people with allergies.

Argh. Flying can be an annoying yet privileged thing all at once. I am so grateful to be on this trip to Orlando. We're here for just under 3 weeks so I have been buying things for during the outbound and inbound flights so that Opeie ( who is 2 , and has allergies to Dairy, eggs, soya and gluten ) stays happy and hunger free on the flights.

With the airlines being so tight on all the regulations regarding what you can/can't take on board I thought I'd try and simplify it and do the leg work for you.

We flew out last week, and there was NOTHING suitable in the airports really for children/ babies, let alone ones with allergies or dietary problems, Stock up, BEFORE you travel!

On board.

You can request Vegan meals on most big Airlines, we have travelled via American Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, and Thomas Cook before now and I've never had a problem getting a Vegan meal. That said they struggle to cater for soya free, although gluten free isn't too much trouble I'm told.

What happens if they can't provide a meal on-board?

This is the case outbound and inbound for us travelling this time. I called the airline and they said that it was important that bring my own food with me. As long as it fits in the carry on hand luggage and it's within the luggage allowance it'll be fine.

Liquids and gels are allowed in these smaller quantities, provided that all such containers fit into a 20x20cm bag. "Liquids and gels" include peanut butter, jelly, frosting, pudding, hummus, , ketchup, dips and other soft or pourable food items. The only exceptions are baby food, baby milk, juice for infants and liquid medicine (with written prescription).

Packing toddler baby food for the plane- if they have allergies.

My favorite way of sorting food out for Opeie is keeping it simple and keeping it fun. Ella's Kitchen has always been a big hit with both boys, for the last 7 years I've been buying their stuff and it's never let us down, I find the way they're packaged in the smoothie pouches so portable and safe for travelling. Last time we flew they made me taste everything individually at the security check in, and everything was in pots which meant that it was a total nightmare as it spilt everywhere. Joy!Luckily when I was standing at security for around 10 minutes this time while they swiped my bags, bits and electrics through I again, had to taste everything, luckily nothing spilt - happy Mama!

Other than smoothies, cereal bars, crisps,  dietry milk - in Opeie's case it would be Alpro Almond, since I don't want to take the whole carton on board its a good idea to just pour what you need into a travel cup.

Equipment for on the plane

I've recently found lots of new products that work great for Opeie, the Oxo Tot range, I found it in Wholefoods Market, but since then I've seen it online alot too on Amazon since. I love the fact that everything has been designed for parents AND children in mind. This makes traveling so much easier!Thankfully Oxo heard about my tour of Orlando and sent me some to ease the traveling & eating stress for Opeie our 2 yr old. Thanks Oxo!

The Oxo tot products are the best we've ever used- I wish we'd have found them earlier, you have no idea how the simple ideas of a plate with a high lip rim around the edge, makes ALL the difference when travelling with messy eaters like Opeie. We didn't have any mess or spills in the entire 10 hours on the plane.

A sippy cup or bottle: I always have a bottle for Opeie's water with me wherever we are, it's so important that you drink enough water on the flight, this goes for children too. It helps prevent DVT's happening, I've had two pulmonary embolisms- not fun! Drink, drink, drink! I use a Oxo Tot Twist Top drinks bottle for Opeie. It's better for him as he sometimes struggles with my Bobble drinks bottle being quite heavy. The Oxo tot Twist Cup is brilliant as the top twists round pushing the flexi straw into the lid so there are no spills.

A feeding spoon! Yes that's right, pack a plastic soft spoon, since you'd be suprised how handy it will come in on the plane if your little one gets hunrgy before they bring the food trolley around, at least you won't have to bother the flight attendants for a spoon before they have the food carts out. Opeie also likes to play with his. We have the On the Go spoon from Oxo, which is great since it comes in it's own little case keeping it clean and easy to find in your hand luggage.

I wouldn't recommend taking a metal baby spoon as all metal cutlery ( i think ) is seized at the security gates.

A feeding dish, again Oxo tot come up trumps! It's so much easier having a bowl with high sides and compartment divides as you don't want to have to take multiple bowls on the plane. It's also great because it's non-slip rubber material means your less likely to spill anything. Phew!

A few zip-lock bags & empty take out tubs ,  Ziplock bags -useful for putting dirty cutlery and bowls in, or anything else you might need to contain. Empty take out containers for putting food from the airport lounge in....

Wet wipes - I like the Jackson Reece brand the best for travelling. They're the only ones I can find that aren't full of nasty chemicals. They're herbal , smell great and do the job perfectly without harmining Opeie & Seth's skin.

Hand Sanitizer - nowhere to wash your little ones hands before a snack or meal travelling? Jackson Reece make "Mucky Mitts" a all natural Hand sanitiser which is great for using on little ones.

Spare clothes & Blanket - I find it gets cold on the plane so packing something slightly warmer might be handy. You might want a blanket too for your little one, our family favorite is this one by Trunki... it's so cute! It comes with an inflatable pillow too, which when you've finished with, the pillow deflates and the blanket goes back inside the pillow, all zipped up ready for the next comforting adventure! Fab as it's so small it hardly takes up any room at all in the hand luggage.

Do I need a Dr's letter to take food on the plane if I have allergies?

Like everything, it's better to go prepared. Opeie and I both have a signed letter signed by a Doctor explaining our allergies. I also rang the airline and asked their advice on taking food on the plane, they explained you could take enough food on the flight whether you have an allergy or not which is dry foods,  crisps, biscuits or protein bars etc. But things such as hummus, milk etc had to be under 100ml, in a sealed clear  20x20cm bag, but you can take more than 100ml if you have an allergy. I asked if you needed a letter with the details of your allergy on, but the Airline thought this was abit overkill and suggested it would be fine without a letter. My advice is if you really can't eat the food the Airline provide, take a letter!

Here's what I packed anyway (for the food photo lovers....0

Seth's snacks: Graze box for kids, dried bananas, Ella's Kitchen Nibbly Fingers Bars, Bear Yoyo's, Nakd Bars, Raisins and a bottle of water.

For me: A selection of Nakd bars & raisins ( THANKS Nakd!) Cofresh Hummus chips, baked beans, Bounce balls, 3 tubs of hummus and Ella's Kitchen pounches. YUM!!! ( For me Nakd Bars kept me going the entire 18 hour journey to the sunshine state, I ended up leaving most of the food unopened, other than the oatcakes, hummus, and Nakd stuff. )

For Opeie: 2 Bowls: Pasta and  sandwiches, Ella's Kitchen Pouches, Outback Animal biscuits, Nairns Oat & Fruit biscuits, Sesame Snaps, and Nakd Raisins & Beans.

For Pauly: Trek brownie protein bar ( that has 12g of protein- impressive and needed on a flight) , Peppersmith chewing gum , Nakd bar - he can eat plane food.

And... a massive suitcase full of food!

West Midlands Vegan Festival ( Wolverhampton Civic 2013 )

This weekend we were in Wolverhampton on the Saturday as The West Midlands Vegan gathering was on - lots of lovely brands we love , I could have spent a fortune! We bought quite alot , and have enjoyed having some new food options ! It was super busy and buzzing in the building as everyone was everywhere and it was a tricky building as there are so many nooks & crannies with random rooms, we missed Pukka Herbs since we didn't realise it was there until I saw someone with some bags on the way out :(

I could have stayed at the Moo Free stall allllllll day! We bought so much chocolate, we managed to get Mint chocolate , banana chip chocolate , cranberry and hazelnut chocolate , several smaller bars in Santa shapes and some gorgeous caramel-y nib sprinkled chocolate bars .  I'd have photographed it but we've been eating so much chocolate it'd almost gone !

Pauly bought a load of Pulse bars, but I wasn't keen on them , I like the hemp powder though !

We discovered the KoKo brand which we really love !!!! The boys love anything coconut so it's been really nice for them to try something slightly different in the form of the "milk shake" style ones, Seth loved the strawberry ( like me ) and Opeie liked the Chocolate ( like Pauly )

I Also picked up one of the best lip balms I've ever owned by Mimi's Miracle , the lady who owns and runs the company was lovely - very knowledgeable ! I've been using it all week at work and I love it !!!!! I regret not getting some of the face oil now :( The lip balm isn't too oily as its main ingredient is avacardo oil , but it's so moisturising ! Heaven ! Check out the amazing products here .

We then popped to Wolverhampton art gallery which was lovely as its one of my favourite places :)

Opeie was super excited to pick up a pumpkin bath bomb from Lush at the vegan festival too bless him , anything that gets him excited about getting in the bath is a bonus for us as he's not the biggest fan of splashing around in the tub , or heaven forbid - washing his hair! It's like a the sounds of a mad man when it's hair washing day , but the lush pumpkin made everything alot more cheerful!

Blender talk : Reliable blenders for healthy, vegans food preparation

I've been looking for new juice / smoothie  inspiration and this week I found it at Wholefoods market.

We popped down to Cheltenham to visit a friend, who was saying how much he loves the GreenStar juicer we have, and how much he loves his Vitamix blender - and that Vitamix were demonstrating at WFM that day. Perfect timing - the Vitamix model  they were demonstrating was amazing , the smoothie I had was delicious, smooth and unusual tasting - beyond words !If I had an extra £500+ in my account OH MY I would not stop myself, I would have bought one then and there! With the 10 year guarantee though it seems you get your monies worth considering we've gone through 4 blenders in 5 months ( we've not had a blender for 2 months now & shaking my sunwarrior smoothies isn't nice- trust me !)

I love blenders as you can create so many things with them other than just smoothies that they're famed for . I'd like to try making raw soups , Houmous , dips , dressings, ice cream, my own flours, raw recipes and other things that require a good blender , like the Vitamix

I had a passion fruit, mango , apple banana & kiwi , will be recreating this one day  soon , as soon As I have a new blender ... Any recommendations for me please ? So far we've had a Kitchenaid Artisan which melted , 2 Phillips , and my parents Tesco one . So, Any ideas ? I think the Vitamix wins hands down!  ( They used them to make my smoothie at Wholefoods, and it was divine, as I said! )

I've been looking around lots, there are so many to choose from!  What are your favourite high speed blenders? I'd love to hear!

Update on loosing weight as a Vegan Mom | Vegan Diet | Weight loss.

Same trousers, different LIFE!   ( yes my legs are in one trouser leg!)

This week, I was told i'd lost 5% of my body fat in the last 5 weeks. Which was really amazing, my visceral fat is below 7% and this is really down to being Vegan, which makes me happy. I've also gained 300g of muscle, which is really great as It's hard trying to build muscle being limited with no soya and being vegan.

On 18th January 2013 , I decided to change my lifestyle , since then it's been hello raw veg, proteins, and goodness, and good bye processed foods, refined sugars, most gluten and late night snacks .

I've lost 2 stone , 7.5lbs (21.5lbs) since then . I do have lovely food, but what I now concider " treat" food is so different to what I once did.

I owe alot of thanks to certain people, my good man Pauly, My friends Christian, Ellie, Jay, Pixie and my friend and brilliant person trainer Gareth Connell at Purity Health and Fitness.

I had a great work out today with Gareth, we always have a right good giggle, and my cheeks ache from laughing so much. He makes it great fun. This next month will be focusing on strength, resistance, weights and mainly arms and core muscles. My core has been shot to bits  (almost after having two sections ) and I want it back. I want stomach muscles, and I want a flat toned belly, so I am going to get it.

Footnote |

I've had lots of messaged via my Facebook asking what I did / how I lost weight / how I stay motivated ....

My long term goal is LONG term health , I really want to know that my body is in the best physical stateut can be in, looking slim / fit is great but it doesn't always mean that you're healthy in side .

I lost my weight by firstly getting my head in the right place. I think that is key - to REALLY want to loose weight , to REALLY  REALLY be passionate about getting your body in the best health state possible . I did quite a lot of research into things regarding food over the last 3 years - and slowly my bad habits ( BBQ Pringles late at night ) slowly started to be the things that changed the quickest .

What do you buy each week food wise ?

I get asked this quite slot because a Raw , vegan, soya free , mostly gluten free diet mind boggles a lot of people , and they think I eat weird food . I mostly eat loads of salads with a 15-20g of protein , vegan cheese, some home made pesto or salad dressings , soups, roast dinners , raw lasagnes , raw pasta ( which I'm going to write a blog on ) for sweet food I make my famous Raw Peanut Butter Cups , and frozen banana lollies , and other sweet treats I like to make .

I think the main thing is - if you don't buy crap food in , you can't treat your body like a bin . Filling it with junk food . Because its JUST that - junk food ! It's not good for you , and is slowly killing the western world .

I'm planning on writing a piece on working out with my trainer at some point . So I'll answer those questions then !

And remember ....
